Dan Da Dan: “We Become a Family” Episode 18 Recap

This week’s episode is another successful comedy outing for Dan Da Dan featuring the power of rock! Without further ado, let’s discuss the wackiness in this week’s episode.

The big cliffhanger was quickly and easily solved by just splashing Jiji with water. Turbo Granny gets upset at Jiji for his mistake and spanks him with plywood in a slapstick scene. It turns out that Seiko hired just the right people for exorcising the Evil Eye. It turns out she hired a 1980s style hair metal band, who in the English dub, have Spinal Tap-esque British accents. Hey I just dug up on the Internet that the voice of this cartoon band’s lead singer is Marc Hudson, lead singer of the 2000s metal band most famous for “Through the Fire and Flames,” a song Guitar Hero fans know very well.

The band warms up and appear to be…not so talented as the bassist has a string break and the drummer clumsily handles his drumsticks. When they actually perform however, they rock hard. So hard that they cause the main cast to headbang to their rocking tunes. It’s a highly theatrical show full of pyrotechnics, the problem is that Jiji is not enjoying it. It appears that the power of rock is used to exorcise spirits as they have Jiji placed in a bed as he acts as if he is in severe discomfort. Momo uses her psychic powers to try to restrain Jiji as he writhes and shakes. He has traumatic flashbacks to the Evil Eye’s sad and lonely past and doesn’t want Evil Eye to be banished to the afterlife. He begs and pleads and Seiko pulls out a fire extinguisher and cancels the exorcism, reminding the rest of the cast about how the Evil Eye was once a sad and lonely little boy. It starts to rain and they pull Jiji into shelter as fast as possible.

Our main cast ponders how they are going to deal with the Evil Eye now Jiji decided not to exorcise it. They all decide the goal is to get stronger, as that the standard battle shonen solution to every problem. So they all begin training. Seiko explains the techniques for controlling chi and Jiji remembers the silly gestures that Momo did as a child. He attempts to move her, but she uses a technique that makes her an impossible to push or move. The main cast is exhausted and sleeps over after all that they’ve been through. On the way back from school the next morning, we see that Momo and Aira still hate each other and scream at each other over petty stuff. Okarun still smiles knowing he has two girls who like him even if they don’t like each other.

The next day, they all go to school and Momo ponders how she can get dough. She decides to work a part time job despite her job history being less than stellar due to not getting along with the bosses of her previous job. Despite this flaw, she decides to give another try to a part time job. It turns out that Momo and Okarun’s classmates are matchmakers and decide to drag Okarun to the restaurant that Momo works for. He doesn’t want to, being terrified of the idea of a date, but they bring up Jiji and this seems to remind him of what’s at stake. It turns out the place Momo works at is a maid cafe. The trailers for this season have heavily advertised Momo in a maid outfit and we finally see the context of said scene. This ends out the episode.

The goofy rock band and Momo in her cute maid outfit are probably what most people will remember from this episode. The comedy continues to be hilarious. Still hoping someday that Aira and Momo can be at peace with each other, but otherwise the show continues to be a joy to watch.
