Twisted-Wonderland Debuts On Disney+ This October

Twisted-Wonderland

Don’t take this the wrong way, but Disney sure knows how to sell evil. Their stable of villains from their animated films have become a franchise unto themselves. There’s plenty of merch available showing just the villains, with the heroes nowhere to be seen. The Lorcana card game has add-ons specifically themed after the villains, and there’s a series of novels depicting alternate worlds where the villains succeeded. And soon there will even be an anime.

Twisted-Wonderland is the title of this three-season project created by Yana Toboso, also the creator of Black Butler. He came up with the concept, scenario and character designs for the show, which is sort of an isekai (but what else were you expecting).

The main character of the show, yet to be named, passes through a magic mirror into the campus of Night Raven College, which is basically Hogwarts if every house was Slytherin. Residences are divided into seven dormitories, respectively themed after the Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland), the King of Beasts (Scar, The Lion King), the Sea Witch (Ursula, The Little Mermaid), the Sorcerer of the Sands (Jafar, Aladdin), the Evil Queen (Snow White), the King of the Underworld (Hades, Hercules), and the Thorn Fairy (Maleficent, Sleeping Beauty).

Our protagonist is taken in by the school’s headmaster and becomes a student, but there’s no way he plans on completing his term. He’s gotta find a way out of there before he runs into the deadly authority figure known as the Rose-Red Tyrant, Riddle Rosehearts. There’s also this cat that belches blue fire, which we know nothing about but is featured prominently in the trailer.

Twisted-Wonderland is based on the…manga? No, there is no manga, it’s based on a mobile game, which usually isn’t a good sign (and makes this about as corporate a project as you can get). Hopefully Toboso will be able to turn it into something good. The three seasons will be called “Episode of Heartslabyul”, “Episode of Savanaclaw”, and “Episode of Octavinelle,” and the first hits Disney+ in October.
