The Bad Guys 2 Is Good With Critics — And The Box Office

You never know how these sequels are going to go, but the consensus around Dreamworks’ The Bad Guys 2 is that they pulled off the job. Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark, and Miss Tarantula’s latest heist landed favorably with reviewers and the moviegoing public, opening strong.

The Bad Guys 2 pulled in $22.2 million domestic over the weekend, along with $16.3 million from 58 other countries, for an opening total of $38.5 million. That puts it in second place, and you can probably guess what was #1 (Fantastic Four: First Steps with $40 million in its second weekend). Bad Guys 2 was sandwiched between Marvel’s first family and Akiva Schaffer’s Naked Gun remake, which earned $17 million.

Most critical reviews of The Bad Guys 2 are highlighting the snappy humor, the animation upgrade from the previous film, and the larger sense of stakes in the climax. “DreamWorks’s franchise hits its stride with this minor upgrade — a snappier, funnier and more relaxed movie than the original,” says Cath Clarke from The Guardian. The flick currently rests at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Bad Guys 2 follows the events of the first film, and by the time credits rolled Safecracker Mr. Snake, muscle man Mr. Piranha, master of disguise Mr. Shark, master hacker Miss Tarantula and leader Mr. Wolf had completed their character arcs and were no longer Bad Guys. Wouldn’t that make the title of the sequel misleading advertising? Not exactly.

The former Bad Guys have been abducted by three of their biggest fans: a leopard, boar and raven who call themselves the Bad Girls. They want the team’s help in pulling off the ultimate heist — and they literally won’t take no for an answer! The gang’s solution is to do what they did with the cops before…pretend to go along with the plan, but really sabotage it from the inside. However, that could get difficult while clinging to the outside of a shuttle entering orbit.

The movie stars the returning voices of Sam Rockwell as Mr. Wolf, Mark Maron as Mr. Snake, Anthony Ramos as Mr. Piranha, Craig Robinson as Mr. Shark, and Awkwafina as Miss Tarantula, joined by Danielle Brooks as Kitty Kat, Maria Bakalova as Pigtail and Natasha Lyonne as Doom. The Bad Guys 2 is now playing in theaters.
