We’ve still got a long wait ahead for the capper to Sony Animation’s Spider-Verse trilogy, but it sounds like that won’t be the end. News broke this morning that an animated spinoff movie is in development, focused on Spider-Punk, whom we met in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse.
Spider-Punk was created by Dan Slott ten years ago as part of the Spider-Verse comic book event that inspired the movies. He is what his packaging suggests — a punk-era version of Spider-Man from another dimension, with punk-era fashions and attitude. He comes from a land where Norman Osborn is an authoritarian ruler and he leads an anti-establishment resistance against Norm’s forces. His real name is Hobie Brown.
In the film he was rendered in a noisy patchwork style reminiscent of underground zines or the kind of art you’d find stapled to a telephone pole. Watching that for over 90 minutes would cause eye strain, we fear — he will probably be animated differently should his own movie become a reality.
Proposals for the Spider-Punk movie are currently being worked on by Daniel Kaluuya and Ajon Singh. Kaluuya is, in fact, the voice of Spider-Punk from Across The Spider-Verse and will be reprising the role in Beyond The Spider-Verse whenever we get it. He’s also, at this same time, working on, uh….an adult-focused take on Barney The Dinosaur. Wonder how that’s going.
If we do get a Spider-Punk movie, it likely won’t happen until after the Spider-Verse trilogy ends, which means a long long wait. Beyond The Spider-Verse has been delayed several times — originally meant for release one year after the second film, it was removed from the schedule and became a ghost until last April, when it was announced for June 4, 2027. Last month that date slipped to June 25, 2027. Don’t be shocked if it slips again.
