Despite the previous episode feeling like a definitive climax, it appears that the Jiji possession arc is not over and will continue on for several episodes. While last episode was an action epic, this episode was a hilarious comedic gut buster with advancements in the Momo/Okarun romance. Without further ado, let’s recap the hijinks.
The episode begins with priests chanting a prayer to get Jiji unpossessed. Each time they open up the anatomical model he was trapped in last episode to see if he’s unpossessed. They keep thinking “is he unpossessed yet,” and checking but it turns out he’s still possessed. The “is he unpossessed yet,” “no,” gag sets us off on a good start.
Despite still being possessed, the main cast has a party at Seiko’s place celebrating Jiji being contained. In an interesting example of the series experimenting with the medium of animation, the food at the feast is presented in live action and looks very tasty. Aira is there and complains about not being invited to participate in the battle that was brewing these past few episodes. Aira is creeped out about the alien being there, but finds the alien kid adorable. She cuddles the kid. All of a sudden, hot soup is accidentally splashed on the anatomical model containing possessed Jiji and he is seemingly unpossessed. Everyone is skeptical and thinks the Evil Eye is using Jiji’s voice. They open the anatomical model and they see Jiji is wearing a silly face. He is back to his whole cringe self. Suddenly, they realize what is happening. Whenever he is splashed with hot water, he is freed from possession but becomes possessed again when splashed with cold water. Hey isn’t that a Ranma 1/2 reference? Jiji sings the first opening song of Ranma 1/2 in case nobody got the reference.
Seiko drives the kids to the hospital so Jiji can see his parents. Okarun and Momo have a tender moment when they finally hold hands. Okarun seems uncomfortable at first until Momo tells him its okay. This was one adorable moment. Jiji says that he’s a big boy and isn’t worried about his parents, but he ends up weeping mountains of tears when he sees them.
A news report talks about the creepy cult responsible for kidnapping and sacrificing people still being at large. We cut to one of the cult members hiding from the police and shedding her skin to reveal that she’s…..an alien! This is certainly setting up something for future episodes. We appear to not be done with this creepy cult after all.
Momo and Okarun go to school after missing several days due to the major action scene. Some schoolmates give crushing hugs to both of them in relief they are still alive. Both of them are uncomfortable with the aggressive affection. Momo and Aira have a confrontation and Aira reminds her that they are enemies. Of course, Aira points out that she still likes Okarun despite hating Momo, her main romantic rival. Momo says that she wants Okarun and Aira to stay at her place tonight in case Jiji gets possessed. Okarun is okay with this, but Aira begrudgingly does it mainly to be with her crush.
They have a dinner together when Seiko asks Okarun to pass the soy sauce. In a tense scene, Okarun tries to pass it without spilling it. Seiko says that is the wrong kind of soy sauce. Okarun gets the other soy sauce and does accidentally spill it and it lands on Jiji. This silly mistake is costly as the Evil Eye is back and ready for vengeance. How will our heroes deal with this? Stay tuned next week and find out. This was probably the funniest episode of the whole series and another strong hit in the Jiji possession arc. This episode sets up some interesting future developments like Momo and Okarun’s romance and the cult being aliens in disguise.
