Someone recently observed that, lately, Disney characters seem to spend a LOT of time in therapy sessions. We can now add Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde to that list as the bulk of the new Zootopia 2 trailer takes place within a counseling program. I’m not certain if the first Zootopia started the trend of focusing an animated trailer around one scene, but it definitely popularized it — everyone remembers the sloth sequence now.
When we first met rabbit officer Hopps, she had just moved to the big city and was looking forward to tacking big cases, but found herself stuck on parking duty. She should’ve been careful what she wished for, as the biggest case ever fell directly in her lap, and forced her to work with con artist Wilde — a fox, she loathes foxes! — to unravel a conspiracy.
In Zootopia 2 — which the trailer suggests takes place one week after the end of Zootopia 1 — Judy and Nick are now partners and working together on a new case. There might be a snake loose in the city, and snakes are forbidden in their jurisdiction. What Nick was to Judy in the previous story, Gary DeSnake will be to them both. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman are back to voice the main characters, and Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) plays Gary. If the therapist sounded like Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson, that’s because it is.
Returning roles include Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Bonnie Hunt as Bonnie Hopps, Don Lake as Stu Hopps, Nate Torrence as Clawhauser, Jenny Slate as Bellwether, Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton, Maurice LaMarche as Mr. Big, Leah Latham as Fru Fru, Josh Dallas as Frantic Pig, Tommy Chong as Yax, Mark Rhino Smith as Officer McHorn, Raymond Persi as Flash the sloth, and Shakira as Gazelle.
“It’s been an absolute joy to reteam with so many actors who made the first film so special, and so exciting to expand the world with our phenomenal new cast members,” says director/writer Jared Bush, who is also the Chief Creative Officer for Walt Disney Animation Studios. “I can’t wait for audiences to see what other surprises we have in store in this brand-new adventure.”
Zootopia 2 opens in theaters this Thanksgiving, November 26.
