Two weeks ago I wrote about the meteoric rise of Sony Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix and speculated what the next move would be, and expressed my worry that “nothing” would be a response. That might sound ridiculous to some given how big it is at the moment, but Netflix watching a passionate fanbase grow and doing nothing with it is not without precedence. I watched it happen with Warrior Nun and some other IPs they ignored.
Fortunately some VERY encouraging news is coming out to the press today — the kind that should make your shoulders dance, and your eyes possibly explode with popcorn. The Wrap broke the news that Netflix is in talks with Sony on continuing the adventures of Rumi, Mira and Zoey in multiple forms, including two sequels to the first movie to create a trilogy, and even a full series.
In other words, we’re going full Eisner — we’re Lilo & Stitching this sucker 2000s style. And…I think that’s awesome! This is what I want! These are great characters that can support many adventures, I feel. A reporter on IGN expressed concern that the movie had “wrapped up” its plot. Hah! Did Buffy end with the Kristy Swanson movie? For the hunters of underworld horrors, there is always something to slay!
Now here’s where it gets weird. Netflix might also be interested in….uh, a live-action remake of the first film. What, now? Already? Are they trying to leapfrog Disney by beating Moana’s record? Has the time to un-animate your animation been reduced to zero?
To be honest an immediate reality-fication of KPDH sounds like the kind of idea Sony might have, and might’ve whispered into Netflix’s ear. Let’s remember this isn’t just the house of Spider-Verse, it’s the house of Madame Web. It’s a very very Amy Pascal kind of move.
But that’s just one component of a road map that is animated for the most part. In summary, it’s all golden. Huntrix will be performing for years to come. The Chia Pet with a moss version of Mira’s hair is inevitable. Let the tidal wave commence!
