Dan Da Dan: “That’s, Like, Way Deadly” Episode 16 Recap

We finally have the absolutely insane climax to Jiji’s introductory arc and its a huge battle with tons of unexpected cameos in the biggest brawl this series has seen. Let’s recap the sheer spectacle of this big bombastic finale to the story arc.

We begin with the ghoul cult berating Momo for killing the giant worm as they believe the human sacrifices and keeping it appeased prevented the wrath of the volcano god. Momo has a different idea of how to stop the volcano and decides to use the dead worm’s body as a fire hose as the goo it spits out appears to be able to cool down lava. The cult are not happy with her desecrating the worm’s body and engage her in a fight. The rest of the episode is a huge multi-man fight sequence which keeps adding unexpected players.

Our first surprise appearance is the comic relief shrine guy from the season premiere. We learn that Seiko is his sensei, a very surprising revelation. He is able to fight off the creepy cult people with gusto despite our initial impressions of him being a comedic buffoon. He’s not the last comic relief character we’ll see in this fight. All of a sudden Evil Eye Jiji comes and attacks both the cult and the shrine guy. The cult decides to have a truce with Momo and the shrine guy. They team up against Evil Eye Jiji, who turns out to be one tough customer, but a cavalcade of unexpected cameos comes to save the day.

Our next cameo is one of the shrimp aliens from season one, specifically the shrimp alien who asked for milk in that one seemingly throwaway comedy episode. His son is piloting the UFO and using the tractor beam to aim the worm at the lava to put out the fires. The kid sings a whacky toon in this wacky scene. The shrimp alien throws in a punch against Evil Eye Jiji, but he’s still too much to handle. Enter another fighter who beams down from the UFO. It’s Momo’s granny herself, Seiko, arriving to save the day. Even more surprising, she is atop the comic relief anatomical model guy who is laying down for some reason. She swings her signature baseball bat, which Evil Eye Jiji is able to parry with his bare body. So not even Seiko is enough to definitely put this guy down. Who can do it?

The hero to do it is the anatomical model guy. He attacks Evil Eye Jiji, but this appears to be a mismatch as Evil Eye Jiji is able to burst the anatomical model into pieces. The shrine guy does a chant that causes the pieces of the anatomical model to encase Evil Eye Jiji and win the battle. So our battle was basically won by the wacky comic relief characters.

After the volcano problem is taken care of and Evil Eye Jiji is dealt with, Momo wonders if Okarun is okay as he’s been MIA this whole episode. She worries that he died from the volcano and carnage and has a breakdown until she discovers a cocoon. She opens it and finds him, albeit unconscious (oh and a grumpy Turbo Granny too). It turns out that Okarun is indeed okay. He slips and falls and accidentally grabs Momo. He apologizes for this, but Momo reciprocates with an intentional hug in a heartwarming end to this episode.

Thus ends this story arc. The next episode preview implies that the next episode will deal with the development of the Momo/Okarun romance and deal with the fallout with Jiji’s possession. Jiji looks normal and unpossessed in the preview, so I guess he turns out okay. The first major arc of season two turned out to be a banger, can the next arc possibly top it?
