Adult Swim dropped one massive surprise on their audience during their SDCC panel today: a Rick And Morty spinoff is in development starring Rick’s frequent nemesis, the President of the United States. In Rick’s universe (at least the one he chooses to live in) that’s Andre Curtis, a no-nonsense African-American who doesn’t hesitate to use his vast resources to rein Rick’s destructive behavior in somewhat.
What does Curtis do when Rick isn’t around? The spinoff will answer that question. He and his assistants handle all kinds of sci-fi calamities involving aliens, paranormal phenomena and other unexplained occurrences — yes, they admit the X-Files similarity here, except the government is more of a help than a hindrance since Curtis IS the government.
In other words, the show deals with “the kind of crises that Rick Sanchez could never be bothered with.” Dan Harmon, who is involved with both shows, told the SDCC audience, “It’s the level of sci-fi that would only be boring to Rick.” Which might be a problem? It’s nearly impossible to get more hardcore sci-fi than Rick And Morty. What if President Curtis is seen as blander in comparison?
At last the voice cast is guaranteed to rule. We’ve always wanted Keith David to get his own show no matter what it is, and Stephanie Beatriz is always welcome. Jim Rash is also playing someone, and though he isn’t identified, the roles are easy to guess from the image above.
“President Curtis has always been a blast to play,” said David. “Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.”
Harmon and James Siciliano also serve as executive producers of President Curtis alongside Danielle Uhlarik, Monica Mitchell and Steve Levy. “President Curtis has always been one of our favorite characters to write — he’s the only person in the multiverse who can go toe-to-toe with Rick and still hold office,” said Harmon and Siciliano. “Now we finally get to go on sci-fi missions from Curtis’ point of view. And with Keith David leading the charge, it’s going to be a wild ride.”
President Curtis currently has no release window; Rick And Morty wraps up its eighth season this Sunday at 11 PM.
