The Misadventures Of Sirfetch’d & Pichu Coming From Aardman

The Misadventures Of Sirfetch’d & Pichu

Pokemon Concierge won’t be the only stop-motion Pokemon series for long. We’ve known Aardman was doing something with the franchise since last December, when a collaboration between the studio and Pokemon was teased. During yesterday’s Pokemon Direct the project was revealed: presenting The Misadventures Of Sirfetch’d & Pichu.

The teaser released by Aardman doesn’t let you see any of the title characters beyond their ears. You hear various sound effects caused by the calamities of what they’re doing, but no solid view of either party. What we DO get is the perspective of one Wooloo, busily grazing in the meadow and almost totally ignorant to what’s going on.

Pichu was introduced all the way back in Generation II, Pokemon Gold and Silver. Pikachu was the undeniable star of the franchise at that point, and a “Pikachu 2” seemed like a slam dunk, but Pichu never really caught on quite as much. As Walt once said, “you can’t top pigs with pigs,” or electric mice in this case.

Wooloo didn’t exist until Sword & Shield, the eighth generation of Pokemon games which was set in the region of Galar, heavily inspired by England. Sirfetch’d was also introduced in the same games as a Galarian variant of Farfetch’d. The PR hints that the show is “set in a region Trainers have explored before — one that is very close to Aardman’s heart.” Hmm, do we have to spell it out?

Stop motion is the slowest form of animation there is, which is why it’s taken so long to get a second season of Pokemon Concierge (one that is as short as the first) and why The Misadventures Of Sirfetch’d & Pichu has a release date as far off as 2027. But sooner or later, these two creatures will show their full bodies — and we’ll pass along the image.
