We’re getting two Nintendo Directs in two weeks: the first, which aired this morning, was exclusively about the Switch, while the second, scheduled for one week from now, will reveal the opening lineup for the Switch 2 (presumably). You’d think all the big announcements would be saved for next week, right?
Uh, correct. Today’s Direct didn’t offer much in the way of earthshattering new information. Everyone was here for Metroid Prime 4, but Nintendo put it in the middle of the Direct instead of the beginning or end, as if it was just another game. I can confidently say there’s more anticipation over this than there will be over Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream.
A painterly style has been applied over Metroid Prime 4, which looks good, but the real twist is that on this adventure, Samus has been imbued with psychic powers AND she eventually gets one shiny hotrod of a new outfit. She won’t be able to keep any of this, of course. All Metroid Prime games are prequels. She’ll just have to enjoy moving things with her mind while she can. Still no specific release date for this one (beyond “2025”), but we’re still hoping for an enhanced Switch 2 port.
Pokemon Legends Z-A already had its own Direct, but here’s a bit of new information they didn’t share last time: when night falls in Lumiose City, the real trainers come out and the Z-A Royale begins. The idea is to train and battle during the day so you can stand up to these tougher opponents. Still no specific release date for this one either (beyond “2025” again).
There were several surprise “today” releases, as Directs tend to have, but the biggest was a full remake of Square Enix’s SaGa Frontier 2. If you’ve never played this game, it just got a lot easier to find.
AI: The Somnium Files isn’t dead. This upcoming third game in the series, from the maker of the Zero Escape series, borrows a bit from those earlier deadly escape room games: a Japanese idol wakes up to find herself imprisoned in a deadly trap. But you’re not playing as the idol, you’re the titular Kaname Date, who gets no sleep until he can bring her back down to Earth (she’s trapped in space, you see…the series is as wacky as ever).
Konami’s latest retro game package is Gradius Origins, which includes the arcade versions of Gradius, Salamander, Life Force, Gradius 2, Gradius 3, and Salamander 2 — and even a new sequel, Salamander 3. It’s due out August 7.
Finally here’s that Tomodachi Life trailer the Direct ended with. With a 2026 release window, it won’t be out until well after the Switch 2’s launch.
