Despite how John Wick 4 ended and Keanu Reeves previous comments on the matter, you can’t keep a good franchise down.
Today, Lionsgate has revealed during CinemaCon that the “Wickerverse” will be ever expanding, not just spin-offs (such as the upcoming Ballerina this summer and a future film about Cain the blind assassin), but an animated prequel film on the horizon.
Keanu Reeves is set to return to voice is animated counterpart as well as returning for 5th installment. The official description is as follows:
“The animated film will go back in time to tell the story of John Wick before the first film, as he completes the Impossible Task — the killing of all of his rivals in one night — in order to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with the love of his life, Helen.
Like the live-action feature films, the animated movie will deliver the highly stylized and defined action that John Wick fans expect and will be aimed at more mature audiences.”
The film will be directed by Sharron Tindle, best known for co-writing Laika’s Kubo and the Two Strings, co-directing Netflix’s recent Ultraman animated film Ultraman: Rising and had a hand in character design work for many classic shows such as Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, The Fairly OddParents, Static Shock, and Samurai Jack, among others. He also previously worked with Netflix in adapting William Joyce’s Oillie’s Odyssey into Lost Oillie in 2022.
Whether they’ll be other animated projects in the not to distant future is up in the air, but an action heavy franchise like John Wick is tailor made for the animated medium.
