Just when you thought it was safe to be near the vicinity of a litter box, Nyaight of the Living Cat is back with Trailer #2. Note again that the title is not a typo, it’s a pun on “nyan,” the Japanese version of “meow.”
The premise is basically “what if the zombie apocalypse, but cats instead, with all the same rules applying.” If a cat “infects” you, you turn into a cat yourself and join the herd. These aren’t evil, demented-looking cats, just ordinary felines who behave as such. It’s amazing how so much of normal cat behavior becomes threatening when the consequences are assimilation. You know how a cat will paw at your door when it wants in? It happens in this trailer and everyone screams with fear.
This is pretty much everything I was hoping for. When the first trailer came out I expressed hope that they would take this completely seriously, and indeed they are. Well, not “seriously” seriously but you know what I mean. The cats are treated as a real threat on the level of a biohazard. At no point does anyone wink at the camera or say something intentionally cheesy. Being aware of its own ridiculousness would kill something like this, and the director seems to know.
That director, by the way, is Takashi Miike, the guy known for some of Japan’s most disturbing horror films like Audition and Ichi the Killer. Now he’s doing this. What a genius.
Nyaight of the Living Cat is based on the manga of almost the same name (same title, except “night” was spelled correctly) by Hawkman and Mecha-Roots. OLM, who normally handles the Pokemon anime, will animate this one and Kamiya Tomohiro will direct various episodes.
We now have a July street date for this show, but the exact day of premiere, or when there will be a dub version, are currently unknown. It’s a Sony production, so Crunchyroll has first dibs worldwide. In the meantime, as you wait for summer, watch your pets closely.
