Since its Thanksgiving release, Disney’s Zootopia 2 has raked in $333 million domestically and $1.13 billion overseas, adding up to $1.46 billion — and as of today, that puts it over the line to break the record for the all-time biggest animated breadwinner in Disney history.
Who held the previous record? You probably already know the answer is “Disney itself.” Frozen II used to be the all-timer with a $1.45 billion take six years ago. Now Zootopia 2 has beaten it and it’s not out of the cinemas yet. It can go further!
Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman return in Zootopia 2 to voice Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde respectively, who are now working together to track down the rumor that a snake is loose in the city…a snake named Gary with the voice of Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once). Reptiles as a whole are banned in Zootopia, but is Gary such a bad guy?
Other returning roles in Zootopia 2 include Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Bonnie Hunt as Bonnie Hopps, Don Lake as Stu Hopps, Nate Torrence as Clawhauser, Jenny Slate as Bellwether, Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton, Maurice LaMarche as Mr. Big, Leah Latham as Fru Fru, Josh Dallas as Frantic Pig, Tommy Chong as Yax, Mark Rhino Smith as Officer McHorn, Raymond Persi as Flash the sloth, and Shakira as Gazelle.
New to Zootopia are Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) as Dr. Fuzzby, Fortune Feimster (Crushing It) as beaver Nibbles Maplestick, Patrick Warburton (The Emperor’s New Groove, Family Guy, Puddy) as Mayor Brian Winddancer, Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live), and David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), plus Macaulay Culkin (American Horror Story) and Brenda Song (The Last Showgirl) as Zootopian power couple the Lynxleys. For those who don’t know, Culkin and Song are married in real life.
If there was a pattern to the 2025 box office, it is lost on me. Some original movies did well and some original movies did badly. Some sequels did well and some sequels did badly. It all seemed to be random. At least Zootopia is a good movie (so they tell me…I have yet to see it) and deserves its big success.
This would seem to make Zootopia 3 all but inevitable, but with Disney, you never know.
