New “Wild Blue Skies” Gameplay Trailer: The “Star Fox” Spiritual Successor Fans Have Long Needed

First announced at the Humble Games Showcase in March 2025 under the name “Wild Blue”, the initial trailer was somewhat overlooked, outside of the reveal that it was being worked on by Giles Goddard, one of the developers for the original Star Fox game for Nintendo (along with other games, including work on Super Mario 64). Now with the latest trailer, the name of the project has been changed to “Wild Blue Skies”, and with the gameplay on display in the trailer, it’s apparent this is a Star Fox tribute game we all needed! After all, it’s been 9 years since the last game in what used be one of Nintendo’s flagship series (with 2016’s “Star Fox Zero” on the Wii U).

The game is being created by developer Chuhai Labs (the makers of “Cursed to Golf”,  a “roguelike” Indie gem from 2022), and being published by Humble Games (the publisher of hit Indie games like “Slay the Spire” and “A Hat in Time”).

Here’s the latest trailer:

Here’s the description from the developer:

“Wild Blue Skies is an exciting and modern take on the classic on-rail adventures of the ’90s.

Soar over oceans, desert ridges, and perilous caves, battling waves of enemies and pushing back Grimclaw’s forces. With the help of allies, you’ll fight to restore peace while experiencing the thrill of classic arcade flight-combat!

Easy-to-learn controls make Wild Blue Skies accessible for newcomers and genre veterans alike, while the game’s stunning visuals immerse you in a hand-crafted, anime-style universe. With its compelling gameplay loop, branching paths, and thrilling missions, every flight is an adventure!”

As long as the “Wild Blue Skies” cast doesn’t mention anything about “barrel rolls”….

So far, “Wild Blue Skies” is only confirmed for the Xbox Series X/S and PC (via Steam), but it’s not been announced as an “Exclusive” for Xbox consoles yet. Perhaps it will be announced for more consoles soon. There’s also no release date yet, but we’re hopeful it’s coming sometime in 2026.
