This year’s San Diego Comic-Con once again featured a Star Trek panel, focusing on various projects of this long running franchise. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Starfleet Academy, as well as a newly announced scripted podcast series, were all featured during the presentation. Below is a rundown of the major announcements to come out of this year’s panel.
Season 3 is currently premiering new episodes weekly on Paramount+. The audience at the panel was treated to an advance screening of this week’s new episode, titled “A Space Adventure Hour” (set to debut on July 31st); the episode is a murder mystery type of story set inside the Enterprise’s holodeck system, and was directed by Jonathan Frakes (whom fans of the franchise might remember best for playing “Number One” Will Riker in various projects, beginning with Star Trek: The Next Generation).
Also shown was an advance sneak peek clip for a season 4 episode, in which the crew is tuned into puppets. This episode will be directed by Jordan Canning (Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock) with a full starship crew of puppets from Jim Henson‘s Creature Shop. Check out the brief teaser below in the article. Work on season 4 of the show is mostly complete it seems, and work has also begun on the 5th season, which will be the final one for Strange New Worlds.
A first look trailer for the new show was revealed during the panel. While Starfleet Academy doesn’t have a concrete premiere date yet, it is on track to debut in early 2026. It will star Holly Hunter as Chancellor Nahla Ake; the cast list also includes Sandro Rosta as Caleb Mir, Karim Diane as Jay-Den Kraag, Kerrice Brooks as Series Acclimation Mil, a.k.a. Sam, George Hawkins as Darem Reymi and Bella Shepard as Genesis Lythe. The series also features Gina Yashere as Commander Lura Thok, Zoe Steiner as Tarima Sadal, and returning franchise stars Robert Picardo as The Doctor, Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance, and Paul Giamatti as Nus Braka. Check out the teaser below.
A new scripted podcast was also announced during the panel. This is set to debut on September 8 of this year, with new episodes releasing on Mondays. Starring Naveen Andrews as titular Khan Noonien Singh, the voice cast also includes Wrenn Schmidt, Sonya Cassidy, Olli Haaskivi, Maury Sterling, Mercy Malick, Zuri Washington, and none other than George Takei and Tim Russ, reprising their classic roles of Captain Sulu, and Ensign Tuvok, respectively. The podcast series is written by Kirsten Beyer and David Mack, based on a story by Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) writer/director Nicholas Meyer and directed by Fred Greenhalgh. It’s supposed to explore the unseen events that lead to Khan’s villainous role in The Wrath of Khan. Check out a teaser for the podcast below in the article.
Stay tuned for further Star Trek updates as they happen. Most Star Trek titles – both classic and modern – are available for streaming on Paramount+.
