There’s been a question mark hovering over the second season of Netflix’s One Piece adaption since it was first confirmed. If the series continued on the manga’s storyline, Season 2 would have to introduce the next member of the Straw Hat Pirates and…well, this is an interesting one. This is a live-action show and they were about to hit a character that would be impossible to depict without CG: Tony Tony Chopper.
Chopper is a fan favorite, and any One Piece adaption without him would feel empty. But he’s not human. Chopper is a reindeer who ate a Devil Fruit that gave him intelligence and the power to warp his body into a human shape. Tony Tony decided to put his smarts to good use and become a doctor. That’s when Luffy and the Straw Hats first meet him.
By this point, Netflix has revealed every cast member for Season 2 EXCEPT Chopper. The streamer must’ve been waiting for some big moment to resolve this mystery, and it came in TUDUM, the live presentation last weekend that was devoted to new trailers and announcements for their most popular shows (and Happy Gilmore 2). It was here that finally, finally, Chopper stepped out from the shadows, hat and all:
I haven’t paid attention to the general reaction, but personally, I love him and think the CG effects team got him down perfect. Chopper’s voice will be performed by Mikaela Hoover, who also voiced Floor in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and will be appearing in person as Cat Grant in this summer’s Superman movie.
Also, Chopper will be appearing in Happy Gilmore 2. Since every joke in that movie appears to be a repeat of a joke from the original, Chopper will be replacing the role of Bob Barker and will be beating Sandler senseless during a celebrity pro-am.
It’s a good thing One Piece became a hit, because we doubt it could spare the expense of a CG main character otherwise, let alone the extremely lengthy list of cast members for the upcoming season:
Charithra Chandran as Miss Wednesday
Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0
Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha
