King Of The Hill’s Jonathan Joss Dead At 59

Jonathan Joss

Yet another King of the Hill actor has died — on top of Johnny Hardwick, Brittany Murphy, Victor Aaron and Tom Petty we can now add Jonathan Joss, who took over the role of John Redcorn after the first season and would retain it through the next 12 seasons on Fox and the revival.

That role was vacated by Aaron, who perished in a car crash in 1996 before KOTH could begin airing. At this point all of Redcorn’s lines are likely to have been recorded for the series revival that’s scheduled to appear on Hulu this August, but if the streamer orders any more, the staff would have to cast a third Redcorn (or just retire the character altogether — we’ll see what they do).

King of the Hill wasn’t the only series Joss had a role on…he was also Ken Hotate on Parks and Recreation, a character he played in several episodes. Co-star Nick Offerman said to People Magazine “The cast has been texting together about it all day and we’re just heartbroken. Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.” Chris Pratt said on Instagram “Damn. RIP Jonathan Always such a kind dude. He played Ken in Parks and was also in [The Magnificent Seven]. Sad to see. Prayers up. Hug your loved ones.”

The cause of Joss’s death was murder, committed by his neighbor after a heated argument, San Antonio police say. That neighbor, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, was taken into custody and charged with Joss’s murder shortly after the incident. Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, said on social media they have had problems with the man in the past and that he was “yelling violent homophobic slurs” before committing the act, making the motive a possible hate crime.

Jonathan Joss died June 1 of multiple gunshot wounds; he was 59.
