Regular Show was one of the cornerstones of Cartoon Network’s 2010’s renaissance and had built up an enormous fanbase. It was probably most famous for it’s boundary pushing humor and its ability to sneak naughty jokes past the censors. The pilot famously, or infamously depending on who you ask, was iconic for getting the infamous “p-word” past the censors in its initial airing, which got changed to “ticked” in reruns. Add in the fact that this cartoon was about twentysomething slacker characters, and you’ve got a show that had lots of crossover appeal with twentysomething slackers. It appears that this adult crossover appeal and the fact that ten year-olds who saw the premiere in 2011 are now around 24 is a major reason why a continuation of Regular Show has been reported to air on Adult Swim Canada according to Corus Entertainment.
It stands to reason that the new Regular Show revival will probably air on Adult Swim in the US also, or possibly go direct to (HBO) Max, but the news of it airing on Adult Swim Canada seems to suggest that this title will be too edgy for regular Cartoon Network. It wouldn’t be surprising if the show tries to say the “p-word” for real, this time not censored in reruns. This is not the first Cartoon Network to get such a treatment as Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake was a critically and fan acclaimed spinoff of Adventure Time. The fifth season of Samurai Jack was an example of Adult Swim continuing a beloved Cartoon Network show. Sure, there have been some not-so-beloved adult versions of kids cartoons that have aired like Velma and Ren and Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon, but Fionna and Cake seemed to prove that this type of show can be done correctly.
Regular Show is the story of two talking animal slackers, Mordecai and Rigby who are supposed to be working at a park, but often don’t because they are slackers. Benson, a talking gumball machine, is their mean boss who tries to get them to actually work. Totally normal things happen in this show like the protagonists going into a limousine demolition derby or the protagonists going on an epic adventure in outer space. It’s a totally regular show where nothing weird happens.
Considering how a big hit the Cartoon Network version was, there will certainly be hype around it. Will it be the next Fionna and Cake or the next Velma? We’ll find out.
