Ted Is Getting His Own Animated Series

Who says the foul-mouthed teddy bear from Boston is all washed up? Ted seems to have a more vibrant career now than ever — soon he’ll be adding an animated series to his work history.

“Isn’t there already a Ted TV show?” you might be asking. And yep, there is: it’s on Peacock, it’s live-action and it’s a prequel to the movies. Apparently it wasn’t enough: this animated version, just announced today, will also be on Peacock and it will take place after Ted 2.

The premise of the original Ted was to take the standard plot of a corny family film, like say a child’s teddy bear coming to life, and extend it further, showing what that would essentially lead to decades later. Ted and the man who wished him to sentience are still together, but have become slacker losers. John, now 35, insists Ted has to move out and get a life of his own, but Ted makes a mess of this.

Ted opened in 2012 and made back its budget several times over, leading to Ted 2 three years later….which was not considered as good as the original and committed the cardinal sin of having the love interest from the first film completely vanish off-camera in the sequel (come on, Seth, be smarter than that). That could have been the end of Ted right there, but like a wish on a shooting star, the Peacock series seems to have revived him.

The Ted prequel series was actually the most-watched original title in Peacock’s history and the #1 original streaming comedy in the US for over two months. It was also vastly more critically praised than Ted 2. When you take those facts into account, the streamer’s desire to have TWO Ted shows of different mediums makes a little more sense.

The Ted animated series will star the returning cast from the films, including Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett, Jessica Barth as Tami-Lynn, Amanda Seyfried as Sam, and, of course, Seth MacFarlane as Ted himself. MacFarlane will also serve as executive producer alongside Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh, who also produce the live-action Ted show. The cartoon will be produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, Fuzzy Door and MRC.

There’s no word on when we could be seeing this show, but there’s no word on when Season 2 of the other Ted show could appear either.
