Given how it’s rare for Dreamworks shows to get a movie, it’s definitely quite unexpected when a show does get one. That’s the case with Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, which comes out in theaters on September 26, 2025. Here’s the trailer, and everything that you need to know.
First, let’s familiarize ourself with the source material. Gabby’s Dollhouse is a live action/animation hybrid preschool series produced by Dreamworks Animation Television that came out on Netflix on January 5, 2021. The series is created by Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey of the Blue’s Clues and Team Umizoomi fame. The show follows a young girl named Gabby who’s really into cats. When she touches her pretend cat ears, she becomes and shrinks down to the size of a cat toy as she goes on all sorts of adventures with her cat friends. One would probably wonder why the series would get a theatrical movie, but it makes sense. The show is consistently in Netflix’s top 10 kids shows. There’s tons of merchandise and publicity. Episodes uploaded to the Gabby’s Dollhouse YouTube channel and Netflix Jr YouTube channel get millions of views easily. There was even a Thanksgiving Day Parade float in 2024. It’s easy to see why this would get a theatrical movie.
This will be the third movie based on a DreamWorks show after Spirit Untamed (which is based on Spirit Riding Free Riding TV show) and Trollhunters: Rise Of The Titans (based on the Tales Of Arcadia trilogy of shows that started with Trollhunters). Granted, this movie will be produced by DreamWorks Animation and released in theaters much like the former, unlike how the latter was made by Dreamworks Animation Television and put on Netflix.
As for the plot of the movie, it’s quite interesting. Gabby goes on a road trip with her grandma, GiGi, to the urban wonderland of Cat Francisco. But when Gabby’s dollhouse, her most prized possession, ends up in the hands of an eccentric cat lady named Vera, Gabby sets off on an adventure through the real world to get the Gabby Cats back together and save the dollhouse before it’s too late.
Unlike Spirit Untamed, which saw everyone recast, this the movie will see the return of the show’s primary voice cast, including Laila Lockhart Kraner as Gabby, Logan Bailey as Pandy Paws, Eduardo Franco as DJ Catnip, Juliet Donenfeld as Cakey, Donovan Patton as CatRat, Sainty Nelsen as Pillow Cat, Maggie Lowe as Baby Box, Carla Tassara as Carlita, Tara Strong as Kitty Fairy, and Secunda Wood as MerCat. Joining the cast in live action roles are Gloria Estefan as Gabby’s grandma GiGi and Kristen Wiig as the movie’s villain Vera. While their roles are unknown, the supporting voice cast includes Ego Nwodim, Kyle Mooney, Melissa Villaseñor, Thomas Lennon, Jason Mantzoukas, Fortune Feimster, Maria Bamford, and Mimi Webb.
Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie is written by Melanie Lobracio Wilson and Adam Wilson (who worked on other preschool shows like Muppet Babies 2018, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, and fellow Dreamworks series Madagascar: A Little Wild, and have movie experience due to writing the Unicorn Academy pilot movie) alongside its director Ryan Crego (who’s storyboarded on movies like Puss In Boots and Mr. Peabody And Sherman, worked on shows like Sanjay And Craig and Home: Adventures With Tip And Oh, and created both Arlo The Alligator Boy and its TV spinoff I Heart Arlo). Series creators Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey serve as executive producers alongside Steven Schweickart. Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie is produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. It’ll open on September 26, 2025.
