New Trailer Released For Fantastic Four: First Steps

One of Marvel Studios’ big challenges will be reintroducing the Fantastic Four as part of the MCU after the public has seen several non-adjacent versions already. To pull that off, the “official” version is going to have to make a bigger impression, and they have several ideas on how to do that.

For one thing, it’s a different setting than the previous films — it’s in the past. It might not even be the main MCU timeline (we’ll have to ask the TVA about that). It also leaps ahead, skipping the First Family’s origin and Reed and Sue’s marriage, starting instead at the time Sue becomes pregnant with Franklin. There’s one thing they can’t avoid repeating: the introduction of Galactus. But his herald is different…Shalla-Bal tells the Earth it’s “marked for death” instead of the Silver Surfer.

The Fantastic Four were Marvel’s first hit back in 1961, and are considered the foundation of Marvel as we know it. The team consists of: Reed Richards, a genius scientist with graying hair and the ability to stretch his body to wacky proportions (also, he’s a bit arrogant sometimes). Sue Storm (sometimes Sue Richards), blessed with the gift of energy shields and invisibility. Sue’s brother Johnny Storm, a literal hothead who can become a flying man of fire at will. And the Clobberin’ One himself, The Thing, aka Ben Grimm, a nigh-indestructible man of rock.

These people thought their careers would be as astronauts, but their first mission went awry when cosmic rays bombarded their spacecraft. When they returned to Earth, they discovered the rays gave them powers. Ever since, they’ve lived public lives as superheroes, living in a giant tower with “4” on it and waiting for the next call to save the day.

Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as Reed, Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) as Sue, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Johnny, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) as Thing. Other cast members include Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne and Paul Walter Hauser. I still wanna know who Lyonne is playing.

Will the Fantastic Four be enough of a success to take a second set of steps? We’ll find out July 25.
