Live-Action Zelda Movie Given Release Date

It was late 2023 when we got the news: Nintendo was following up The Super Mario Bros Movie with something long-demanded…a Legend of Zelda movie. However, it was going to look a little different…the feature that’s in pre-production now is a live-action one.

Nintendo just revealed the release date as one of the first bits of information on their new Nintendo Today news app. It’s not anytime soon: March 26, 2027 is what they said. They also left it at that, and walked away.

So here’s everything else we know: creator Shigeru Miyamoto will be personally involved alongside Avi Arad, the film producer responsible for most of the Spider-Man movies. According to Miyamoto he personally asked for Arad’s invovement, and has been planning this film for “many years now.”

“I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it,” Miyamoto was quoted as saying back in November of 2023.

The feature is being produced by Sony Pictures, marking the first Nintendo / Sony collaboration since the Nintendo Playstation prototype console back in 1993. You may have heard that didn’t go well….guess they’ve finally patched things up. Sitting in the director’s chair will be Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the Maze Runner trilogy). Derek Connolly has been tasked with writing the script — his past work includes “Jurassic World.”

No details regarding the plot or casting have been revealed yet. A safe bet would be the story will involve an elf-like man taking down a powerful demon king with the help of a (possibly imprisoned) magic princess. But that’s just speculation on our part. Let the wait for March 2027 begin!
