In the years following the introduction of Rick & Morty, Adult Swim didn’t seem to be able to get anything else to catch on. Just about everything that lacked Dan Harmon’s involvement was short-lived and quickly cancelled. Granted, a lot of that had to do with the Zaslav takeover and his killing of shows that were on the rise and had potential to be huge with enough time (we miss Joe Pera and the Debras).
But lately their luck has turned a corner. After bombs like Teenage Euthanasia and Birdgirl, AS finally drew a winner in Smiling Friends, a viral hit that deserves every bit of its virality. Now with Haha, You Clowns, they may have a second. The series, whose freshman season has been following Smiling Friends’ third, was just renewed for not one, but two additional seasons.
The show is a new experiment for Adult Swim, with a deliberately non-cynical worldview and humor that grows from the heart. According to AS’s president the series started out quiet, but has picked up viewers and steam with each passing week.
“It’s amazing that Joe and the team made something as radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny as Haha, You Clowns,” said Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim. “But what’s even more amazing is that — in this cynical, uncertain time — all of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons. In the words of the show: ‘You are strong! You are loved!’”
“I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave Haha, You Clowns a chance and spread the word,” adds series creator Joe Cappa. “I’m incredibly thrilled I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer.”
Adult Swim, of course, will NEED new hit shows if they want to weather the oncoming storm that is the WB-Netflix merger. No one knows how it’s going to affect AS or any other cable channel WB currently has claim to.
