It’s not common knowledge, but Netflix already had an animated demon slayer before those other people showed up. He was even half-demon, in fact — Rumi can’t claim exclusivity on that either. The cocky and self-assured Dante leapt from the Capcom video games to the television screen in the anime adaption of Devil May Cry, which premiered earlier this year.
Buried in the many, many announcements of The Game Awards was the revealed release date for the second season. It was accompanied by a live performance from Evanescence because the series is set in the early 2000s, the same time as when the games were the most popular. Believe it or not there’s even a War On Terror subplot.
After Amy Lee was done singing, Netflix released a new screenshot from Season 2 to the press as well as this synopsis: “In Season 2, a war between worlds ignites as Dante must battle the only force that mirrors his own: his estranged twin brother Vergil.” Vergil’s appearances throughout Season 1 were mostly in flashbacks, depicting the twin sons being instructed by their mother to protect two halves of an ancient stone that would tear a rift between this world and the underworld. Dante kinda failed at keeping that from happening, which will affect Season 2.

“Season 2 is a vvvvveryyyyy different show,” showrunner Adi Shankar claimed in a statement to the press. “Yes, Dante levels up. His skills improve and you’ll see him embrace more of the iconic badassery fans of the game expect. That said, I’m still telling a story, and great characters don’t just win — they grow. What makes Dante compelling isn’t that he’s unstoppable — it’s that he learns and keeps getting stronger.”
The Devil May Cry show stars Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante, Robbie Daymond as Vergil and Scout Taylor-Compton as Lady. Vergil will be largely new, but Lady took up a controversially substantial period of screen time in Season 1, leading some fans to whine “Where is Dante in this Dante show?” Maybe Season 2 can strike more of a balance. Don’t count on seeing the Vice President again, though, unless they recast him…he was the last role of the late Kevin Conroy.
Devil May Cry Season 2 will be released onto Netflix May 12, 2026.
