If Nintendo is doing something inscrutable, it must be a day that ends in “Y,” right? Today’s Inscrutable Event is the release of an animated short from the company that, on the surface, has nothing to do with any of their products at all. It’s not about Switch 2, it’s not about the Alarmo, it’s not about hollow Virtual Boy shells that cost a hundred bucks, it’s about a baby. Just…a baby.
…Maybe Nintendo’s getting into the in-vitro fertilization business.
The baby is playing around in its playpen when its mother arrives with its most desired object in the world: a pacifier. The baby gets to suck on it for a few minutes, but soon it loses it when..everything starts moving on its own. The blocks, the balls, even the pacifier itself once it’s spit out. The baby tries to catch it, but the pacifier keeps leaping to higher and higher levels. When it gets stuck on the mobile, the baby stands up and walks toward it…just in time for the mother to come back and witness its first steps.
The most popular theory is that this is about Pikmin, or an unannounced Pikmin game. The music score takes several cues from the Pikmin series, and the way the objects are moving is exactly the way they move when Pikmin are carrying them. The only problem is, in most cases the blocks are clearly floating in midair by themselves, with no Pikmin under them. But there is one shot at 1:39 when the baby is trying to get onto a chair and the background is out of focus — and something small moves under the crib.
Some fans have theorized this is an early tie-in to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, due out next spring, in which cast the baby would be an infant Rosalina. But isn’t Rosalina from space? This short takes place on Earth. Or does it?
It could also very well mean nothing. It could be just a weird short Nintendo made just to make it. The only thing we can really say for sure is that Nintendo’s animated babies are a lot less creepy than Sony’s.
UPDATE: Nintendo has since uploaded an alternate version of this short to their My Nintendo app. The invisible creatures that were hoisting the blocks around were indeed Pikmin. So now what does THIS mean: an imminent announcement for Pikmin 5, or a Switch 2 version of Pikmin 4? Based on recent decisions we’re guessing the second one.
