Back in May, Fox made a grand announcement of multiple-season renewals for all its animated shows produced through 20th Century Studios: The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers and American Dad. Everyone noticed one show was missing from that lineup, but Fox told the press they couldn’t announce the fate of The Great North because its current season hadn’t finished running.
We all sighed and said “Pull the other leg while you’re at it.” Bob’s Burgers hadn’t finished its season either. Animation Domination temporarily moved to Thursdays due to sports commitments so a rare summer of original content could play out; surplus episodes of Bob’s, Great North and Grimsburg that had no room to air in the season schedule debuted there.
While we suppose there was hope The Great North would pull off some kind of freaky ratings rise, that obviously didn’t occur. Despite its quality and fanbase, the show is still dead last among Fox comedies, and so the ruling came down late Friday evening. Alanis Morrisette appeared in the sky for the last time September 14.
“We’re so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren and the amazing cast and crew put into The Great North,” said Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network. “It’s difficult to say goodbye, but we’re thankful for the five hilarious seasons The Great North brought to the iconic Animation Domination lineup.”
Aimee Steinberger, who worked as a director on the show, wrote on her Bluesky account. “It’s one of a very small number of shows I’ve worked on that I genuinely loved and I really loved the whole talented crew I worked with. I feel lucky to have been there.”
We are equally as lucky to have five full seasons of this show. The Great North was last in the ratings among Fox comedies LAST season as well, and was considered a bubble show that could be canned any second. Instead, it squeaked out another renewal. We honestly don’t know why — maybe to get it past 100 episodes, if syndication is still a thing — but we’re grateful that so much of it exists, and that if we ever want to revisit a Bouchard-ized version of Alaska again, we’ll have a lot to reminisce over.
