Fantastic Four Takes Final Steps With Ultimate Trailer

Fantastic Four: First Steps is now approximately one month from opening, which means it’s time for the promotional campaign to really kick into gear. The film’s final trailer was released this morning, and though many have come before it, it appears we still haven’t seen everything. The last sneak peek revealed Sue would be pregnant with Franklin, but there are several scenes in this one where she’s already given birth to him.

Introduced in 1961, the Fantastic Four are considered the foundation of Marvel as we know it, but it’s been a long road clawing back the movie rights and getting them under the MCU umbrella. Since this adaption is the third, they’ve taken some creative interpretations with the FF’s world, like making it a period piece and changing who Galactus’ herald is.

But the team remains the same: Reed Richards, a genius scientist with graying hair and super-stretchy powers; Sue Storm (sometimes Sue Richards), blessed with the gift of energy shields and invisibility; Sue’s brother Johnny Storm, a literal hothead who can become a flying man of fire at will; and The Thing, aka Ben Grimm, a nigh-indestructible man of rock.

I’m a bit disappointed that this trailer suggests we’re not getting the traditional gruff-talking Thing, only a sardonic world-weary rock-man who just projects the media image of gruff. He even claims “It’s Clobberin’ Time” is just a catch phrase from the cartoon they made from the team, and not something he really says. This can’t be! I know we’ve gotten the traditional Thing twice already and they might’ve wanted something different, but it’s demanded for a reason.

Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as Reed, Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) as Sue, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Johnny, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) as Thing. Other cast members include Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne and Paul Walter Hauser. Marvel’s First Family assembles on July 25.
