The last episode of the Steven Universe saga aired on Cartoon Network five years ago. The series was given that rarest of chances, the opportunity to end itself on its own terms and tell a complete, solid story, with almost no loose ends left over. Well….there was ONE loose end. There was Lars.
Lars was introduced as a bit player in the Steven Universe universe, a wannabe punker with gauged earholes and an unrequited desire for his co-worker at Beach City’s local junk food factory, Big Donut. That was basically all there was to him until midway through the series, when the weirdest thing happened — Lars got sucked up into the craziness of the main plot via being abducted into space by accident.
Now trapped on the homeworld of the Gem Empire, Lars had to quickly figure something out. He befriended a gang of misfit Gems called the Off-Colors and became their leader, but wound up sacrificing himself to protect them. Relax, it was a Disney Death — Steven’s healing powers not only saved his life, but for some reason turned him pink.
The next time we saw Lars, he had become Captain Harlock, slick caped vest and all. He had his own spaceship now and he went by a new moniker: Lars of the Stars. His mission: to defend the innocent across the galaxy. Then he blasted off into space and we never saw him again.
Until now! Prime Video (because Cartoon Network sure ain’t gonna do it) has announced a Lars of the Stars TV series will appear on its servers sometime in the future. The series will reveal what Lars and his crew have been up to, which according to Prime has been “smuggling contraband, evading the authorities, and uncovering the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire.”
Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar will oversee the new series, sharing executive producer duties with her husband and frequent collaborator, Ian Jones-Quartey. Lars of the Stars currently has no release date set.
