Okay, hate to be the bearer of bad news but this episode is a “talking” episode rather than an action episode. Those hoping for spectacle will be left profoundly disappointed. Still, this episode provided some Leland backstory and information on why the government wants Axel killed. So without further ado, let’s recap the episode.
The episode begins with a news report of tons of people falling seriously ill with a fever in a scene that seems to be deliberately evocative of the early 2020’s coronavirus pandemic. We learn via the news report that businesses and government offices have been shut down due to the crisis. The English dub’s delivery is really flat so the newscasters seem only mildly interested in the world being about to end.
The next scene involves the Lazarus team examining the pill and learning that it is an anti-blood clot pill commonly used by people with artificial hearts. The Lazarus team finds no records of Skinner receiving an artificial art. Hersch points out that there is a a super secret hospital for rich people that does surgeries “off the record.” It turns out that Leland reveals himself to be a rich kid who can use his family to access the super secret hospital.
Axel, Doug, and Leland arrive at the latter’s ritzy estate and a butler rudely tells Axel and Doug to leave. Leland tells the butler that they are his friends and the butler apologizes. We are introduced to Leland’s sister who is very angry at Leland for leaving the family and becoming a criminal. Leland’s parents are dead and Leland is set to become the heir to the family. She is extremely upset at the sexism of male inheritance and is jealous of Leland. He asks for help in getting to the super secret hospital, but it turns out that his sister gives him the condition of spending a weekend with her is the condition for her helping. We are reminded this is the last weekend before the apocalypse officially starts. Leland keeps the purpose of him getting into the hospital a secret even though revealing that he’s on a mission to prevent the apocalypse might get her to cooperate. He decides to spend some family time with his sister to get access.
Meanwhile, Hersch finds security footage of Skinner smuggling the prototype of Hapna and escaping the authorities. It turns out that the prototype is even deadlier than the version he tricked the majority of the human race to take as it instantly killed. It turns out that a prison in Arizona used inmates as guinea pigs, the very prison that housed Axel. So we learn Axel survived the killer prototype version of Hapna and it seems very likely that him surviving it is the reason the government sent that assassin to kill him last episode.
Eleina points out that one of the hackers working for Skinner is probably monitoring his heart using a computer. She remembers her conflict with Popcorn Wizard, the elite hacker from Islamabad. She plans to go there to track down her nemesis. Popcorn Wizard seemed to get mixed reactions from her debut episode as it people seemed to find her either endearingly hammy or insufferably annoying. Whether you like it or not, she’s coming back. Doug reminds Eleina that Pakistan isn’t the safest country for a teenage girl to go to alone and he agrees to go with her.
The next scene is the Lazarus team talking with a nurse at the super secret hospital and learning that Skinner was indeed there. That’s all really as it seems like the super secret hospital isn’t as good a lead as going to Islamabad and getting Popcorn Wizard to tell them where Dr. Skinner is.
The climax has the assassin from the last episode arrive in dramatic and over-the-top fashion. He jumps off an overpass and onto a freeway without getting hurt from the fall or the traffic going 75+ miles per hour. Traffic conveniently stops when they all see the crazy guy jump off an overpass. The preview shows that we are in for big, dumb action and that’s still the main draw of the series.
Aside from the ridiculous climactic cliffhanger, this was probably the most boring episode of Lazarus so far. Knowing Leland’s backstory as some bored rich kid who decided crime was more fun than spending time with his family arguably makes him less likable than before we knew his backstory. Next episode will at least be a dumb fun action episode.
