Kaiju No. 8 season one was one of 2024’s smash hits, combining battle shonen with kaiju. We finally have a confirmed Crunchyroll release date of July 19. The short “Hoshino’s Day Off,” originally released as part of compilation movie, will air on Japanese television July 5, with a livestream on X/Twitter (no word on if there will be any subtitles or not). Although there is no hard confirmation a Crunchyroll release of this short could also come.
Season 2 is streaming during a very crowded summer 2025 season, competing directly with the other major Shonen Jump action title Dan Da Dan, which is set to premiere a few weeks early on July 3. Other heavy hitters it will compete against include Bullet/Bullet (July 16), Rent-a-Girlfriend season 4 (July 4) and My Dress Up Darling season 2 (July 5). Season one was able to still be a major hit despite competing against the megahits My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer, so maybe running against Dan Da Dan isn’t quite as risky as it sounds.
Season one had a same day simuldub released alongside with the subtitled version, at least until the last two episodes when the dub hit a delay. Can the entire season last without a dub delay? Will season 2 also attempt a same day dub? We’ll see.
For those unaware of what this show is about and why it was majorly popular, this show is the story of an out of shape thirtysomething man named Kafka who cleans up after the mess made during the military’s fights with kaiju. He somehow becomes a kaiju, the titular Kaiju No. 8, and fights the evil kaiju. He decides to become part of the anti-kaiju special forces while hiding his transformation and makes friends with them. For fans of the Godzilla franchise and the battle shonen genre, this genre mashup is one of the coolest ever. Production IG gave us eye-dropping kaiju action to go along with lovable characters who bond over kicking kaiju butt. If season 2 can keep the momentum season one had, we should a major hit on our hands.
