Final Trailer Released For How To Train Your Dragon Remake

How To Train Your Dragon

Universal has released what they say will be the last big trailer for the live-action How To Train Your Dragon movie before it comes out in June. Dean DuBois, who co-wrote and co-directed the original as well as its sequels, has returned once more to revisit the original, based on the book series by Cressida Cowell.

Mason Thames plays Hiccup, taking over from Jay Baruchel in the cartoon version. He sounds totally different, lacking Baruchel’s monotone delivery. Gerard Butler, who plays Viking chief Stoick The Vast, sounds exactly the same however — because he WAS Stoick in the original. Nico Parker plays Astrid, Nick Frost is the new Gobber and Julian Dennison bears the honorable moniker of Fishlegs Ingerman.

Until now, we didn’t know if the remake would take any liberties with the story of the original, or if it would be shot-for-shot the same. With this latest look, “the same” seems to be most likely. Most of the scenes shown here are identical to the animated film. They’ve even put the climax of the whole movie in here (so if you haven’t seen ANY Dragon film, maybe don’t watch that part).

I still think this remake is unnecessary, but I have to admit the shots of Hiccup riding Toothless — which make up a good three-fourths of this trailer — look very good. Thames doesn’t look like he’s pantomiming against air in front of a greenscreen, he looks like he’s really riding that thing. The trailer calls extra attention to the fact that it’s coming to IMAX, and you can see why. These dizzying shots through the canyons of Berk would look amazing there.

There’s no shortage of HTTYD material out there — since 2010 three movies, multiple TV shows and several holiday specials have been produced. There’s only one live-action take on the franchise, though — for now. It’s obvious Dreamworks will never let this die. How To Train Your Dragon will be reborn June 13, 2025.
