It appears that every episode of this chase for Dr. Skinner will take our heroes to a different location to kick butt and take names and this episode was the one where they go clubbing. This episode probably has the most impressive action sequence the show has put on, a couple of laughs, a cool setting, and seems to be the strongest episode released so far. So without further ado, let’s recap the episode.
Following up on last week’s cliffhanger, Eleina discusses her belief that Hacker 909 is the one who may be helping Dr. Skinner hide his tracks. This famed hacker has a friend named Sam, who is known for his love of clubbing and womanizing. This leads our heroes to their plan of going to a club he loves to attend and get some information out of him. This means that it is Christine’s time to shine as a femme fatale type character, although they have an interesting backup plan in case Sam has a different taste in woman. Leland is forced to disguise himself as a woman in case 909 has different tastes in woman. Eleina is a minor and they spare her from having to interact with the sleazy guy. Axel and Doug don’t have to cross-dress for the plan and Axel gets to tease Leland.
We get to see the main setpiece of this episode that is the futuristic club the episode is set in. The exterior was rendered with not the impressive CGI, but the interior done in 2D makes it look like a very good time. We get a well animated dance scene featuring Christine and the many extras attending the club. Axel finds out that upstairs is a restricted area that only people with a special scannable tattoo can enter. Christine continues to have fun and get some drinks at the bar when Sam finally arrives to pick up women.
We don’t really learn anything from Sam about Dr. Skinner except that the former believes the latter is an awesome guy who created an awesome drug. Sam loves to recreationally use Hapna and believes this is no big deal because he believes that somebody will find a cure to the “kill the human race within a month” side effects. Like every lead in this show, it seems like every place our heroes go to find clues for Dr. Skinner’s whereabouts turn out to be wastes of time to them. At least to the audience, they provide cool scenery setpieces for the obligatory fight of the week.
Sam puts his arm around Christine, who isn’t exactly comfortable with the sleazy guy. We soon learn how sleazy as it turns out that he was drugging her drink in a date rape attempt. Somehow, she has an ability to sense roofies and is also immune to roofies, somehow, I don’t know how, she just says, “I’m immune to roofies.” She gets her first fight scene and whips 909’s butt. Another sleazy guy attempts unwanted sexual contact with Leland, but the big fight scene spares him as our heroes go on a rapist killing spree.
What ensues is the most impressive action sequence in the show so far when everyone except Leland shows off their skills at engaging in over the top violence. The influence of action supervisor Chad Staheleski is very much on display as this scene feels very much out of a John Wick movie. Axel still has a unique parkour fighting style, while Doug and Christine do more standard punches and kicks, albeit flashy punches and kicks. Christine also shows off her marksmen skills with her gun as she racks up kills.
After punching, kicking, and shooting their way through sleazy rapists and goons, two of them jump into a helicopter and Axel jumps onto the helicopter. They say Axel, “Is a guy who has seen too many action movies.” The villains ask their helicopter’s AI to do fancy evasive maneuvers, but the AI refuses. Axel then jumps off the helicopter onto a Green Goblin glider and then shoots the villains. The episode ends. This is probably the most entertaining episode for the big dumb yet extravagantly presented violence expected of the Toonami brand. If you want to see cartoon characters kill rapists John Wick style while dancing to some slick club music, this episode is for you.
