Another Surprise Simpsons Exclusive Episode Hits Disney+

Yesterday, the same day the second season of Andor premiered on Disney+, subscribers got an unexpected bonus: a new episode of The Simpsons exclusive to the service. Entitled “Yellow Planet,” the episode is a parody of NatGeo nature documentaries, in which “Homer and Marge navigate the ocean as whales from different series, Bart hatches as an iguana struggling to survive, and Lisa leads her flock as a finch.”

“Along the way, familiar Springfield faces appear in unexpected roles, shaping their journeys in the wild,” Disney+ says. It may be the first time I get to say this but…Futurama did it first!

Not counting the shorts, this is the third episode of The Simpsons to debut in streaming, following last December’s O C’mon All Ye Faithful and last February’s The Past and the Furious. This one, given its theme, was timed to premiere on Earth Day, April 22.

This reporter hasn’t personally watched the episode yet (look, can you blame me? Andor is RIGHT THERE and I only have so much free time per day). But the exclusive episodes have been, so far, pretty good. O C’mon All Ye Faithful in particular was excellent, a new classic, and at nearly an hour long it felt like it was made for the service to begin with. The Past and the Furious felt more like it was originally intended for Fox.

The Simpsons was just renewed for FOUR seasons alongside fellow Animation Domination staples Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers (as well as American Dad, which returns to Fox soon after an eleven-year absence). However, it’s been given 15 episodes a season. If these special Disney+ episodes are going to continue, it could be a way to make up the difference and bring the season count up to typical levels.

All episodes of The Simpsons are streamable now on Disney+ minus the current Fox season, which is available on Hulu up to the current episode. Disney+ also recently launched a 24/7 Simpsons channel on the service which is beaming every episode in sequential order.
