It’s finally happening, everybody. Guard your cabbages because there will soon be a new Avatar in town. Nickelodeon, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko formally announced the long-awaited, long-demanded third series in the Avatar canon: Seven Havens.

“Avatar: Seven Havens is set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm,” Nick revealed. “A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra – but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.” The official full title is Avatar: Seven Havens which must mean Paramount no longer fears the wrath of James Cameron over having the A-word in the title.

“When we created the original series, we never imagined we’d still be expanding the world decades later,” says DiMartino and Konietzko. “This new incarnation of the Avatarverse is full of fantasy, mystery, and a whole new cast of amazing characters.”

In this age of streaming dominance we had to double -check, but…yes, this is branded a Nickelodeon show, with the intent to run on Nickelodeon first and foremost. This might set some fans on edge because…remember how badly Nick treated The Legend Of Korra when they had it? Moving it around, having it disappear for months, shoving the last two seasons onto their website in favor of Spongebob reruns?

That was a while ago, though, and there are signs the Nick of today is willing to avoid at least some of those mistakes: the series has been given a two-season order of 13 episodes each. Back when Korra was in production, they would only order one season at a time, which affected the quality of the show by forcing the writers to contain events within that season. Nick seems to have the awareness now to give Mike and Bryan breathing room.

We can’t wait, but there is a lot of waiting in our future regardless. It’ll likely be years before Seven Havens is finished (guess we’ll see if there’s still a Nickelodeon at that point). But several ATLA projects were put in the works before this, the first of which is due out a year from now: a feature film following Aang as an adult. The future looks bright for Avatar fans with an endless cascade of shows and movies coming our way, eventually including the Netflix live-action adaptation of Seven Havens sometime in 2047.
