In case you were wondering how that neat-looking Steelbook release of Arcane Season One did in sales — because it’s never a guarantee how well these things will do no matter how neat they look — it must have done well enough. GKIDS, who licensed and distributed the first season on Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray last year, just announced they’ve extended the rights to publish Season 2 as well.
The deal covers worldwide rights. excluding China, to both seasons of the series, and allows GKIDS to produce and distribute said content in physical format across all regions. Since Netflix did not stream Arcane in 4K, this version will be exclusive to home video.
“The GKIDS team is absolutely thrilled to continue its partnership with Riot and Fortiche,” said GKIDS Director of Home Entertainment Alison Kozberg. “From the beginning, we developed our season one 4KUHD and Blu-ray editions with an eye towards eventually celebrating the whole story of Jinx, Vi, Piltover and Zaun. We couldn’t be more excited to create something really special for the arc’s momentous conclusion.”
Arcane, which was always planned to be two seasons long, was about a class war between two communities, the ritzy city of Piltover and the gritty city of Zaun beneath it, with the central POVs coming from two sisters of differing pastel hair color. Its overlords at Riot, who also create the League of Legends games the series is based on, have more adaptions planned from the same world (and have not ruled out the possibility of characters that appeared in Arcane appearing again later).
Arcane’s latest season took the Annie Awards by storm earlier this month, winning all seven categories it was nominated in including Best FX (TV), Best Character Animation (TV), Best Direction (TV), Best Music (TV), Best Production Design (TV), Best Storyboarding (TV), and Best Editorial (TV). It couldn’t win Best TV Series because, oddly, it didn’t have a nomination there.
Exact details, like what the Arcane Season 2 Blu will look like or what special features it will contain, have yet to be determined. We will probably learn more in the coming months. Traditionally products like these target a late-year holiday release.
