Disney Moves ‘Elio’ Release Date Back One Week

The next Pixar film, Elio, is due out this summer, but exactly when keeps changing. Disney just delayed its release by one week, from June 13 to June 20. Did one particular shot take extra rendering time? No, it’s more like they got scared….of Dreamworks.

Dreamworks just scheduled their How To Train Your Dragon live-action remake for June 13. That’s not even an animated film but Disney blinked anyway. Seems unlike them — don’t they consider themselves the biggest fish? Maybe they have more faith in remakes these days (which tracks…)

The titular Elio is a little boy with one dream in life: to get abducted by a UFO. He doesn’t fit in among Earthlings and believes he would better fit in among aliens. One would think the odds wouldn’t be very good for Elio to be picked specifically, but perhaps he does something the trailers haven’t shown yet (we’re still waiting on the main trailer to appear). Long story short, he does get beamed up.

Elio has been invited to the Communiverse, a paradise resort for extraterrestrials from all over the galaxies. But why him? Because Elio told them a little white lie: the club is rather elite and they believe he’s the leader of Earth. More happens than just that, but further details will have to wait for a bigger trailer. All we know is “he’ll have to form unexpected bonds, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and make sure he doesn’t lose the opportunity to live out his ultimate dream.”

Elio stars the voices of Yonas Kibreab as “The Leader Of Uh Earth,” Zoe Saldaña as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO. It is directed by Madeline Sharafian (Burrow SparkShort), Domee Shi (Bao, Turning Red) and Adrian Molina (co-screenwriter/co-director of Coco), and produced by Mary Alice Drumm (associate producer of Coco).

Elio will now release in theaters June 20. Guess we’ll find out if it can stand up at the box office against week-old Hiccup reruns.
