The Rumors Are 2: Switch 2 Officially Revealed By Nintendo

All the inside tipsters were saying Nintendo would formally announce the Switch 2 on January 16. Everyone scoffed and mocked, but now who’s laughing? (Yup, I can hear Kit and Krysta giggling from here)…thanks to an Apple-like wordless video that visually showed off what’s changing through swooping CG animations, we have some official verified information on Nintendo’s next console.

Like we said last week, this announcement was delayed so long that keeping a lid on the intimate details was all but impossible. There are zero surprises here, but they are nice to have confirmed. Just as the leakers claimed, the device’s actual name is “Switch 2.” It’s slightly bigger than the original Switch, though Nintendo hasn’t released the exact dimensions. The Joy-Cons are bigger too and attach magnetically. There’s a “C” button on the right Joy-Con that has a mysterious unconfirmed function. There are now two USB-C ports, on the top and bottom.

Backwards compatibility with Switch 1 was also confirmed, but with an asterisk: Nintendo says “Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” This is common for backwards compatibility….I’m old enough to remember that a handful of Playstation 1 games would not play on the Playstation 2. Hopefully the level of impact on the Switch 1’s library is similarly small.

You may get the chance to try out Switch 2 pre-release, as long as you happen to live near a major metropolitan city that isn’t Chicago. Here are the North American tour dates:

  • New York, April 4-6, 2025
  • Los Angeles, April 11-13, 2025
  • Dallas, April 25-27, 2025
  • Toronto, April 25-27, 2025

Elsewhere, dates vary from early April to late May. Given all this, it’s unlikely that the Switch 2 will go on sale anytime this winter or spring, like some were predicting. It’s speculated now the device could launch in the summer, which would give you some time to save up: analysts are predicting a $400 price tag.

More will be revealed on April 2 with a Switch 2-specific Nintendo Direct. Until then, replay the seven seconds of Mario Kart 9 shown off here over and over….and dream.
