The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep Coming February 11

The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep

So the Witcher TV show isn’t what it used to be. Maybe Geralt can find new life as an animated character? Netflix released Nightmare of the Wolf, a cartoon movie set in the same world, a couple years ago but it followed a different character. In the follow-up movie, Sirens of the Deep, the Witcher everyone knows takes center stage.

Sirens of the Deep is an adaption of the short story “A Little Sacrifice,” written by creator Andrzej Sapkowski for his second Witcher book Sword of Destiny. The plot is similar here: while on his regular duty of walking around slaying monsters for hire, Geralt runs across a political situation, which he doesn’t realize is one until he’s knee-deep in it.

There have been a series of attacks recently at a seaside village. When Geralt goes to investigate and possibly stab whatever’s causing the issue, he discovers the village is actually at war with an underwater kingdom of merfolk. To prevent the situation from escalating, Geralt, his traveling buddy Jaskier, and Essi (a new ally who appears in this one story only) are going to have to stare down and defeat a gigantic tentacled sea beast.

As you know, Henry Cavill departed the role of Geralt after the most recent season, and to deal with that, Studio Mir has come up with an inventive solution: they’ve hired Doug Cockle, the voice actor for the character in the Witcher video games, to play the role here. If you’ve played any of those games, It will make for a weird hybrid sensation as everyone else is voiced by their actors from the live-action series — Anya Chalotra is Yennefer of Vengerberg and Joey Batey is Jaskier.

But the animation looks good and it’s based on a real Sapkowski story with no creative re-interpretation or unnecessary filler, so even if the live-action series is all downhill from here, we might at least have a good animated take. The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep hits Netflix February 11.
