This week’s Dan Da Dan was some of the most over the top ridiculous shonen spectacle seen in a weird and wacky battle involving giant crabs. You’ve got to see it for yourself, but for those who need a refresher on the episode’s events, let’s recap them. Again, a warning that this series contains some sexual humor and viewer and reading discretion is advised.
Momo and Okarun go to the creepy tunnel to deal with Turbo Granny. Momo uses her psychic powers to hurl projectiles at her, but it turns out that Turbo Granny has teeth in her eyes, as it seems like an omnipresent anime cliche to have characters with mouths were mouths shouldn’t be. Momo and Okarun challenge Turbo Granny to a game of tag (Momo and Okarun are “it”) and ask for a ten minute head start. Turns out that Turbo Granny is a cheater and she counts fast. She imprisons Momo and Okarun calls Turbo Granny out. The villain says that she can count however she wants. Okarun has an interesting combat technique of biting Turbo Granny in a strategic area to get her to release Momo. This indeed works and Momo is free.
Okarun is still able to, as Danny Phantom says, go ghost, and they go run for the hills while Turbo Granny transforms into a giant crab. They have a huge chase scene through the city and Okarun carries Momo on piggyback while Momo uses her psychic powers to create psychic grappling hooks to swing from building to building Spider-Man style. This whole chase sequence is punctuated by a very memorable use of technoesque remixes of classical music (the William Tell overture and the Can Can). Momo has one trick she thinks would work in using boiling water on the crab to cook the crab. This does not work as Turbo Crabby still chases after them.
Turbo Granny is known to go one hundred kilometers an hour, so Momo reasons that she should be able to escape her by going on a train going one hundred twenty kilometers an hour. Turbo Granny reminds Momo that trains do not always go full speed as they need to slow down to turn and that the train will not keep her safe.
Well, actually Turbo Granny fell for Momo and Seiko’s trap as they able to team up to exorcise it using psychic powers. Okarun’s curse is finally gone and they go to the creepy tunnel to pay respects to the defeated spirit. It turns out the creepy tunnel was a place where men did depraved things to girls and their spirits restlessly stayed in the tunnel, unable to move on to the after life. Turbo Granny watched over these spirits and maybe her curse on Okarun was her being under the impression that he was another depraved man. Considering what body part she magically erased from him, this seems all but explicitly stated to be her motive. This is a pretty dark revelation all things considered, but the next scene is back to silly adolescent humor.
The main cast celebrates by eating crab. Only one problem, Okarun does not feel like eating crab after most of this episode’s runtime was devoted to a giant crab trying to eat him. Momo and Seiko seem to not not mind. Seiko claims that the way Okarun is complaining, she is not sure if Okarun got back the anatomical part Turbo Granny took away from him. She demands that Okarun unzip his pants and prove the curse ended. He expectedly refuses.
After this scene, Momo apologizes on behalf of her grandma and says she was just being teasing to cheer him up. Okarun does not find her behavior any less crass, though. We have a big emotional climax where Okarun wonders if their goodbye is goodbye forever or goodbye for now. Momo waves and says that she’ll see him tomorrow.
The episode proper ends and our main plot of resolving Okarun’s curse is seemingly resolved, but the next episode reveals that the curse wasn’t broken after all and that pink haired girl seen in trailers finally shows up. Not surprised the show isn’t ending after only four episodes and I am excited to see what lies next.
