The Wild Robot finished once again at #2 last weekend, proving to have exceptionally long legs. It’s good news for anyone who cares about quality animation succeeding. Transformers One, on the other hand, hasn’t been so fortunate…despite being generally well-received by those who have seen it, it’s been lingering near the bottom of the Top 10 these past few weeks.
In this reporter’s opinion, the failure of Transfomers One can be placed on the marketing department, who packaged all the ads to make the film look like a wacky joke-filled fart-fest aimed at children exclusively. If adults had been made aware there was some quality writing involved, maybe a larger audience could have been convinced to show up.
But if you’re one of the many who didn’t, you now have more options. The digital release for Transformers One happens to be today, and a date for the physical version has now been set as well. The movie will be sold in both DVD form and as a Blu-Ray / 4K combo pack starting December 17. Unfortunately, there don’t appear to be any bonus features included.
Transformers One is an origin movie for Cybertron, Optimus Prime and everything else Gen 1. Taking place billions of years prior to any previous Transformers story, the film follows a young Optimus who doesn’t even have that name yet (he’s called Orion), and can’t change into anything. Neither can his best friend, D-16, who in the future will be called Megatron and won’t be so friendly.
Optimus lives a life of drudgery work completely below the surface of the planet, and has never seen its sun, as he’s not allowed. When he and his friends pick up a distress call, they decide this is their one chance to prove to their elders they have what it takes, and they sneak out. Fortunately for them, one of the first things they find is an ancient cave with a being that grants them their transforming powers. UNfortunately, this same trip also introduces Megatron to the seductive world of evil.
Transformers One stars the voices of Chris Hemsworth as Optimus / Orion, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron / D-16, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-One, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion. It’s on digital platforms now, will arrive on Blu-Ray soon, and is technically still in theaters if you can find one playing it.
