It’s finally time to check out Creature Commandos…from a safe distance. Max’s DC cartoon AND the first such production to be part of the new James Gunn super-verse makes an instant impression by establishing itself to be just as irreverent and gory as Gunn’s own Suicide Squad movie (which we loved, so in theory we should love this too).
Speaking of the Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller can’t rely on it anymore since the US government has outlawed sending convicted criminal humans to accomplish dangerous tasks under penalty of neck bombs going off. Amanda’s all about finding loopholes though. What if she were to assemble a new team that didn’t legally QUALIFY as human?
Thus the Creature Commandos were assembled. The team consists of: Blight from Batman Beyond — I mean, Dr. Phosphorous. Weasel, who first appeared in the Suicide Squad movie and is the same character here. GI Robot, the Nazi-killing automaton. Literal fish out of water Nina Mazursky. And rounding things out, both Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein — this time “Frankenstein” is really his name (his full name is “Eric Frankenstein”).
The trailer suggests these ornery misfits will be pitted against some heavy hitters. We saw Clayface for a second, but he’s nothing compared to Circe, a literal goddess. And don’t count on the show always being funny! Gunn confessed in the NYCC panel for this show that Episode 4 is “the saddest thing I’ve ever written.”
Creature Commandos stars the voices of Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky. and Sean Gunn as Weasel. If you’ve ever wondered why Kirk from Gilmore Girls gets so many parts in James Gunn productions, look at his last name. Yup, they’re siblings.
Creature Commandos will launch December 5 and debut new episodes on a weekly basis until January 16. Warn the neighbors — they’re coming.
