Dan Da Dan: “It’s a Granny vs. Granny Clash!” Episode 3 Recap

Marketing has heavily hyped up this mysterious busty white-haired chain-smoking woman with a baseball bat, and this episode finally provides a shocking reveal of who said character is. The strong debut of the newest member of the main cast is another winning episode in what has turned out to be a very strong battle shonen series. So without further ado, let’s recap all that went down in this episode.

The episode begins introducing us to the white haired lady, who is a host of a local television show and a very phony psychic who provides incorrect predictions about her guest on the show, a famous male idol singer. This seems like a non sequitur to the shocking cliffhanger of last episode, but this character turns out to be very relevant very soon.

The Turbo Granny possessed Okarun attacks an exhausted Momo and it seems like all hope is lost until a nail comes flying at possessed Okarun. The phony television psychic turns out to a baseball bat wielding warrior. She whacks the villain continuously, and threatens to kill her. The baseball bat also can transform into an ink brush that can draw anti-ghost circles for added convenience and the mystery lady demonstrates this ability. Turbo Granny tells the mystery lady that if she dies, the boy she possesses will also die.

The scene abruptly ends and we cut to Momo waking up from a dream. She comes to her living room to see the white haired lady watching television. Yes, the massively hyped sex appeal character is Momo’s grandma, Seiyko Ayase, and one of the titular grannies in the “Granny vs. Granny Fight” this episode was named after. A television news report reveals that the idol singer lied was keeping some secrets from the public and that Seiyko’s predictions maybe aren’t so ineffectual.

Seiyko and Momo discuss the Okarun situation and Sieyko says that the only way to remove Okarun’s curse is for Okarun to go to the creepy tunnel from the first episode and beat Turbo Granny in a game of tag and that talismans will be ineffectual in the creepy tunnel because the Ayase’s god does not control that area. Momo doesn’t think either of them has what it takes to succeed, but Seiyko says that all that is needed is for them to train hard for the game of tag. Before that challenge, we need an obligatory potty humor scene.

Okarun has to poop, but needs Momo to help him control his curse, which leads to an awkward comedy scene of her keeping watch over him while he tries to poop, but can’t. Momo shows off her new psychic powers to grandma who is impressed. She advises her to feel the aura rather than rely on sight for controlling Okarun’s curse. Okarun does not feel comfortable pooping outside and runs to their bathroom, despite them not feeling comfortable with a guest taking a dump in their toilet. He outruns Seiyko and Momo and takes that dump. It is still not explained how or if he can pee considering his curse and this plot point got me thinking about that.

Momo makes it to Okarun and controls his curse with her eyes  closed so she doesn’t see him take the dump. Turbo Granny reveals that she can curse people other than Okarun and can use her curse to instantly kill Seiyko. The ultimatum is to go to creepy tunnel as soon as it turns dark and fight. Momo agrees.

Momo gets outfitted in shrine maiden garb for the big battle and Seiyko has a tender moment where she hugs her granddaughter and begs her to survive the ordeal she will go through. Momo and Okarun take a train in their outfits and get stares. Momo removes the garb and wears her usual stylish teen clothing. The episode ends and the next episode preview teases the big action scene of the next episode. Let’s see if next week’s big hyped battle lives up to the hype!
