The Wild Robot Is Getting A Sequel

There’s great news today for people who are into good movies: Dreamworks’ The Wild Robot has been confirmed to be getting a sequel. Chris Sanders, director of the film currently in theaters, announced the news.

“100% yes, there are absolutely plans for a second one,” Sanders told reporters for Deadline, who broke the story. We wish we could say this is happening simply because the movie is awesome, but its strong box office performance over the three weeks it’s been out is the most likely factor. It’s projected to land in the #2 spot again this weekend.

The wild robot of The Wild Robot is Roz, who activates herself to find she’s been delivered to the wrong location — only she doesn’t know it. Built to serve others and perform tasks when requested, she’s soon running around asking animals if they need help and scaring them to death. There’s one creature she doesn’t scare: a small goose, because it just hatched and thinks Roz is its mother. She really isn’t prepared for that.

The movie uses an innovative new digital painting technique to create 3D environments without the need for texture mapping. “They found a way to paint dimensionally. There is no geometry in the [environments.],” Sanders said in an interview. “We needed the hand-painted look everywhere. Not just in the sky, but on the ground and in the trees, in bushes and flowers and everything. So that’s what they did.”

The Wild Robot is based on a book by Peter Brown, but takes a few liberties in the adaption. There are several volumes in that series; the first sequel is called The Wild Robot Escapes but it’s unknown if the movie sequel will be adapting it.

But without spoiling anything, we will say the movie currently in theaters has an open ending that a sequel could certainly take further. We look forward to it.
