To paraphrase Stewie Griffin, “It’s DEAD! It’s DEAD, all right? We don’t have to hear about it anymore, we don’t have to see it again, it’s DEAD! OKAY?”
Mindy Kaling’s Scooby Doo distortion Velma has finally been declared cancelled after two seasons and a Halloween special that debuted one week ago. The stock phrase for a show like this is “divisive,” but that implies there were two camps to begin with. Nearly everyone loathed Velma, and repeatedly expressed annoyance that it wouldn’t go away (“okay, who’s hate-watching this thing?”)
Ironically Season 2 of Velma ended with Velma dying (at the hands of Scrappy Doo, in case you wanted to know) and the bulk of the Halloween special was spent trying to find a way to bring her back to life. The gang did not succeed until the last minute in a seemingly tacked on moment that suggests the staff saw the writing on the wall and had to wrap it up.
“Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise,” says an anonymous statement from the press release sent out by Max. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”
Was Velma really the worst cartoon ever? Not even close — I’ve seen hundreds of animated shows and there are some out there a lot worse than this. But was Velma good? It wasn’t that either. It was a bunch of forced jokes awkwardly stolen from more popular shows and another attempt by Mindy Kaling to be the center of attention by making the main character literally herself. Nay, it met a deserved fate. I’m just saying Allen Gregory was way worse.
For now, the two seasons and one special that comprise Velma are available to watch on Max, but don’t count on that being the case forever.
