Toonami’s next “original” was just announced, but don’t scream and start running for the ocean — this one isn’t an anime. Invincible Fight Girl is an action show of a different kind, created by Juston Gordon-Montgomery in a flashy, wide-eyed style.
Andy is just your average resident of Wrestling World, a place where wrestling is the biggest, most popular event on the planet. The top wrestlers are superstars, and Andy dreams of becoming the most famous one of them all. Her parents, who wish she’d study to become an accountant. are very disappointed.
But nothing’s going to stand between Andy and her dreams, and she’s going to train under the tutelage of crotchety retired champ Aunt P. Her friends Mikey and Craig will help as well….Mike is described as an “endearingly innocent wrestling analyst” while Craig is “always scheming ways to find a profit from wrestling.” The most important thing is that Andy trains hard because, unlike real life, this kind of pro wrestling isn’t scripted and the punches WILL connect.
“As Adult Swim has expanded, so have the sorts of titles we can offer audiences. Invincible Fight Girl is an outstanding example of that — it blends engaging storytelling with just incredible animation and direction,” said Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen. “This series is a testament to Juston’s creativity and talent, with a series that’s funny and thrilling, and also super inspiring.”
Invincible Fight Girl looks for all the world like another show that was meant for Cartoon Network yet has to premiere on Adult Swim instead because today’s CN is barely there. And for all we know that’s what happened — I find it very hard to believe this was created for AS from Day 1. But the reality is, a lot of these shows like Unicorn and especially My Adventures With Superman would have become lost and unknown if placed in the daytime hours of CN.
Invincible Fight Girl premieres on the Toonami block November 2; each episode will debut there before appearing on Max the following day.
