Even after almost twenty years, Avatar: The Last Airbender still holds up as an amazing show. Wish we could say the same for the video games that have been based on it. The license has been lent to one cheap studio after another, resulting in disappointment after disappointment. Nothing seemed to ever get made that measured up to the series itself.
That may be about to change! News broke this morning that Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive are teaming up to create a AAA action RPG set in the Avatar world. It’ll be the most ambitious Avatar game ever, made in close cooperation with DiMartino and Konietzko’s Avatar Studios to ensure quality.
You will not be controlling Aang or Korra, or anyone else Avatar Studios might be planning to make a movie from. Instead the game will take place thousands of years in the past, in an area neither show or any spinoff content has revealed before, where you’ll be an Avatar unique to the game. Specific details on what you’ll be doing are light, but the developers say that “players can expect to be immersed in a vibrant world, master all four elements, [and] engage in dynamic combat alongside companions.”
“We know loyal fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eager for more stories that bring them into the universe of the show, and through gaming, we’re able to expand the world-building and allow fans to experience the new content in a completely immersive way,” said Doug Rosen, SVP of Games and Emerging Media at Paramount. “Saber Interactive has a proven track record in bringing IP-based games to life, and we are excited to co-fund this AAA title alongside them and let fans experience this world first-hand.”

Since this venture just started, and AAA games take years to form completely, it may be a long time before we see any hint of this Avatar game…but at least we have the knowledge it’s coming.
