The “Jujutsu Kaisen” Manga Just Concluded (The Last Weekly Shonen Jump Manga Series Of The 2010’s)

Jujutsu Kaisen, one of Shonen Jump’s most popular manga, has released its final chapter on September 29. The series, which focuses on battles between sorcerers using curse energy, began its run on March 5, 2018. The manga was initially carried in the English Shonen Jump digital magazine as part of the Jump Start initiative, but it was removed after the three chapter preview. After this, the manga grew in popularity in Japan, but was not legally accessible to American audiences. Late the following year, Viz released the first graphic novel volume on December 3, 2019.

Over 2020, the series became even more popular, especially once the anime adaptation began airing in Japan on October 3, 2020. The MAPPA produced anime directed by Sunghoo Park ran 24 episodes until March 27, 2021 on MBS and TBS stations in Japan. The anime was renowned for its well animated fight scenes. A film adapting the prequel manga Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was released in 2021. A second season aired from July 6-December 28, 2023. This season was directed by Shota Goshozono.

Both seasons received popular success, with Jujutsu Kaisen becoming one of the most streamed anime on Crunchyroll. Guiness World Records awarded Jujutsu Kaisen the Award for “Most in-demand animated tv show.” The English dub of the first season was released on HBO Max on December 4, 2020. Viz Media has released the first season on Blu-Ray on two sets released on February 28, 2023 and October 31, 2023.

Jujutsu Kaisen has been one of the longest running and most successful battle manga in recent Shonen Jump history. Only last month, My Hero Academia concluded its decade long run on August 5, 2024. While Shonen Jump still has a couple of classic 90s battle manga running in One Piece and Hunter X Hunter, the most popular 2010s manga are no longer running in the Weekly Shonen Jump title.

The biggest Jump manga creators have been moving away from the traditional weekly release format. In recent years, My Hero Academia, One Piece, and Jujutu Kaisen have skipped a chapter or two a month. Chainsaw Man ended its serialization in the print magazine and moved to website releases. “One Punch Man”, another popular “website only” Jump manga, has been on hiatus for over seven months. World Trigger moved to the monthly Jump SQ magazine after a two year hiatus in 2016-2018. Former Weekly Shonen Jump mainstay Black Clover moved to quarterly releases in August 2023. Dragon Ball Super and Boruto run monthly in V Jump, with Super on hiatus following the March 2024 death of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.

Behind the move away from weekly releases is the increasing knowledge of health problems associated with weekly serialization. Jujutsu Kaisen had to take a two month hiatus in the summer of 2021 due to health issues of Gege Akutami. Following the death of Akira Toriyama, the creator of One Piece took a month off to focus on his health. Yoshihiro Togashi concluded his Yu Yu Hakusho manga suddenly due to health problems caused by lack of sleep. His subsequent Hunter X Hunter serialization has faced many lengthy hiatuses due to his health.
