The World Will Get More Invincible In Late 2023

Hey, remember Invincible, that swell animated cartoon that was basically a dark spin on Superman? Whatever happened to that show anyway? You might be forgiven for thinking it was cancelled, since it’s been two entire years since its first season and no one’s heard anything about another. That’s just how Amazon (irritatingly) rolls, though. It was today that Invincible himself finally poked out of his hole to explain the situation.

It’s been so long that I’ve forgotten who this orange cyclops is. But the teenager in the blue and yellow tights is Mark Grayson, son of Omni-Man, Earth’s most powerful superhero. Grayson figured being half-human meant he inherited none of his father’s powers — until the day he began flying and bending metal without trying. And it turned out Grayson needed his powers almost immediately, as his father revealed his true intentions for the planet not long after.

Omni-Man was just pretending to be good. He was actually a member of a scary team of alien fascists who sought to “exterminate the weak” through mass genocide of any planet they deemed unworthy. He thought Mark would join him once his powers manifested. Mark refused, and only the slightest bit of fatherly affection stopped Omni-Man from killing him right then. His father shot off into space, to return someday more dangerous than ever. Earth will be in big trouble if Invincible cannot become worthy of his name.

Amazon’s new Invincible teaser, published this morning, is one giant apology for the massive delay between the first season and the next. “I’ve been busy writing, designing, storyboarding, voice acting, keyposing, in-betweening, cleaning up, color-slapping, comping the whole thing and all that, roughly for thousands of shots.” You can’t be more direct than that.

But the orange cyclops won’t let Invincible end the video without promising some kind of release window. “Late 2023” is the promise we get. And it isn’t stated here, but a third season of Invincible has already been ordered.
