Star Wars Visions Returns This May

After a bumpy few years at the box office and a few highly polarizing films, Star Wars has mostly been a TV thing under Disney. That has also generated mixed results, from gigantic cultural hits (The Mandalorian), to revivals gone wrong (Book Of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan), to critical darlings (Andor). But the most interesting thing we’ve seen so far is Star Wars Visions.

Visions, an animated anthology series, is what Star Wars could be if Lucasfilm allowed people to truly experiment with it. The first season consisted of nine shorts created by separate Japanese studios, each with their own unique take on the Lucas mythos, and many of them were quite excellent. It was proof that the wrong people were put in charge of the movies and that it was possible to make this 45-year-old franchise feel completely fresh again.

Now Visions is coming back for a second round, and extending its reach beyond Japan. The entries in the new batch come from all over the world: England, Ireland, India, Korea and even Chile. The most curious entry comes from “Wallace and Gromit” studio Aardman, which makes us picture a clay buck-toothed Jedi going “That was quite a cracking disturbance in the Force, eh govnor?” We’ll see what we get.

  • El Guiri: Sith, written and directed by Rodrigo Blaas
  • Cartoon Saloon: Screecher’s Reach, directed by Paul Young
  • Punkrobot: In the Stars, written and directed by Gabriel Osorio
  • Aardman: I Am Your Mother, directed by Magdalena Osinska
  • Studio Mir: Journey to the Dark Head, diercted by Hyeong Geun Park
  • Studio La Cachette: The Spy Dancer, written and directed by Julie Chheng
  • 88 Pictures: The Bandits of Golak, directed by Ishan Shukla
  • D’art Shtagjio in partnership with Lucasfilm LTD: The Pit, written and directed by LeAndre Thomas, co-directed by Justin Ridge
  • Triggerfish: Aau’s Song, written and directed by Nadia Darries and Daniel Clarke

May the Force be with these shorts and may we receive a Season 3. Star Wars Visions comes back to Disney+ on May the 4th (Star Wars Day).
